Tatler’s Best Dressed Showcases Unknowns Sunday, Jan 31 2010

Tatler’s list of the ten best dressed ladies in the UK was released this weekend. There were a few no brainers, but in a suprisingly bold move there were several virtual unknowns on this year’s list.  I was thrilled to see two of my personal favorites, Carine Roitfeld and Daphne Guinness, on the list.

Check out pictures of the top five below.

Jasmina Anema with President Obama

Jasmina Anema, the beautiful and brave six-year-old who captured the hearts of New Yorkers, lost her battle with leukemia on Wednesday.

Just one month ago she met President Barack Obama at the White House.  Today the President said “Jasmina showed tremendous bravery in the face of adversity, and her ability to stay positive throughout her battle was an inspiration to me and to all those she touched”.

Obama added “as the parents of two young girls, our hearts particularly go out to Jasmina’s devoted mother Thea. Our thoughts and prayers are with her and with all who knew and loved Jasmina.”

Chanel Get’s It Right Thursday, Jan 28 2010

I’m an unashamed Chanel groupie so I reserve the right to gush.  I absolutely love Chanel’s Spring 2010 collection. Light, airy and feminine it’s Karl Lagerfield at his best.

Travolta Fly’s To The Rescue Wednesday, Jan 27 2010

Superstar John Travolta is doing his part for the people of Haiti.  Travolta, a licensed pilot, flew one of his personal jets to Haiti carrying relief supplies along with a team of doctors and Scientology ministers.  Wife Kelly Preston also accompanied him on the relief mission.

The 55-year-old actor flew the Boeing 707 from Florida on Monday carrying 4 tons of ready-to-eat military rations and medical supplies for earthquake victims.

The Church of Scientology says the pair planned to return home after unloading their passengers and supplies.

Art Lover Falls For Picasso Tuesday, Jan 26 2010

The Actor by Piccaso

A painting by Picasso called “The Actor” will undergo repairs after a visitor to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City lost her balance and caused a vertical tear of about 6 inches in the lower right-hand corner.

“The Actor” was painted by the famed artist during the winter of 1904-1905.  The nearly 6-by-4-foot canvas depicts an acrobat posed dramatically against an abstracted backdrop.

Curatorial and conservation staff assessed the painting’s condition following the accident which happened on Friday. The museum says the damage didn’t affect the “focal point of the composition.”  The Metropolitan Museum of Art currently has about 250 works by Picasso in its collection.

Meat-Free Mondays Sunday, Jan 24 2010

Becoming a vegetarian isn’t just about taste buds or animal rights because eating red meat also has environmental repercussions.  According to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, meat accounts for about 18% of greenhouse gas emissions (due to belching from cows, which emits methane), compared to about 13% caused by transportation.  In response, vegetarians like Paul McCartney’s fashion designer daughter Stella are encouraging meat-eaters to skip meat just one day a week, through a program called Meat-Free Mondays.  The idea is simple: If you stick to veggies just one day a week, it’ll have a positive impact on the environment, not to mention your health.

So how about it … think you can trade your Big Mac for a salad or yummy veggie lasagne on Monday?  Visit meatfreemondays.co.uk for more info and helpful menu hints.
