Clokey and his creation

Animator Art Clokey, the creator of Gumby, died Fridayat the age of 88.

Gumby debuted on The Howdy Doody Show, but it was comedian Eddie Murphy who solidified Cokely’s financial success by introducing the character to a new generation of fans in the 80’s.  Murphy famously did a send-up of the character on Saturday Night Live which led to new toy sales and a new syndicated series.

Clokey said he based Gumby’s swooping head on the cowlick hairdo of his father, Arthur Farrington, who died in a car accident when Clokey was just 9 years old.

Clokey is also the creator of Davey and Goliath, a christian series that was produced by the Lutheran Church.
