French Elle Devoted to Plus-size Models Monday, Mar 29 2010

The April issue of French Elle features plus-size model Tara Lynn on the cover and in a roughly twenty-page spread inside the magazine.  The magazine got lots of attention last year for its multiple covers with eight European celebrities, un-retouched and wearing no makeup.

Katherine Heigl Falls Apart Gracefully Friday, Mar 19 2010

Grey’s Anatomy star Katherine Heigl handled an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction like a pro at the ShoWest awards on Thursday night.

A shoulder strap on her beautiful red dress snapped right in the middle of her acceptance speech.  While Heigl seemed momentarily flustered as she struggled to keep her dress up, she quickly recovered with a little assistance from the show’s host, Billy Bush.

Afterwards Heigl smiled brightly for photographers when she appeared in the press room with the offending strap pinned securely in place.  Further proof that the age old Hollywood adage, “The Show Must Go On”, is still held in high esteem.

CFDA Award Nominees Announced Thursday, Mar 18 2010

The Council of Fashion Designers of America announced nominees for this year’s awards show to be held in New York on June 7.

Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs and last year’s pick for up-and-coming talent, Alexander Wang, will compete in the womenswear category, which is considered the big competitive prize of the night.

The emerging-talent nominees in womenswear are Joseph Altuzarra, Prabal Gurung and Michelle Obama fave, Jason Wu.

In menswear, Tom Ford, will compete in the main category with Michael Bastian and Rag & Bone’s David Neville and Marcus Wainwright.  Richard Chai, Patrik Ervell and Simon Spurr were selected for the Swarovski rising-star award.

Perennial accessories designer of the year nominee Jacobs is up against Alexis Bittar and Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez.  The designers, editors, retailers and stylists who pick nominees named Eddie Borgo, Dana Lorenz and Wang as the ones to watch in accessories.  All emerging-talent winners will receive financial support from Swarovski, the Austrian crystal company.

Michael Kors will get the lifetime achievement award, and model-turned-entrepreneur Iman is the year’s fashion icon.  The late Alexander McQueen, who died in an apparent suicide in London last month, will receive the special board of director’s honor at the industry’s annual celebrity-studded gala.

Ikea Dresses Up The Paris Metro Saturday, Mar 13 2010

Ooh la la!!  Ikea made a bold move when they chose to market their signature easy-style furniture in the Paris Metro.  No plain old billboards here.  They put actual furniture on the platform. What do you think?

Alexander McQueen’s Final Collection Friday, Mar 12 2010

The last collection designed by the late Alexander McQueen was shown in Paris this week.  The show was a quiet and graceful in its elegance.  McQueen had obviously taken his inspiration from medieval times.  The show was spearheaded by McQueen’s trusted team of artisans including Sarah Burton, considered to be the iconic designer’s right hand. The 16 outfits shown had been 80 percent finished at the time of his death.

How it saddened me to write the first line of this story.  McQueen’s edgy, avantgarde style will be missed and his Doc Marten’s won’t be easily filled.
